First Visit Expectations

Early dental visits are essential for the oral health of your child. Young children are susceptible to cavities, especially if they sleep with a bottle. Moreover, even though they lose their baby teeth, these teeth are very important. With your child’s first visit, we can examine their existing teeth, as well as the soft tissues of their mouth, and assess the condition of their jaw. We will provide you with techniques on how to improve their oral health and care, at home. These tips may include proper brushing, how to prevent cavities (avoiding letting your child sleep with a bottle of milk or juice), and nutrition for optimal oral health.

Below is an overview of what you can expect during your first visit to Magical Smiles Pediatric Dentistry.

Your child's first visit is not only about our team getting to know you and your child, but also about your child getting to know our team. We encourage our patients to ask questions and express any concerns. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your child's visit exceptional!

Our goal is to make your child feel completely safe and comfortable while providing any necessary care. We ask that to help us in creating a positive and safe environment that you refrain from using any words that may cause unnecessary worry or fear. Some helpful books to read prior to your first visit:

  • The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist – by Stan and Jan Berenstain.

  • Show Me Your Smile: A Visit to the Dentist – Part of the “Dora the Explorer” Series.

  • Going to the Dentist – by Anne Civardi.

  • Elmo Visits the Dentist – Part of the “Sesame Street” Series.

Certain medical conditions can influence your child's treatment plan, so you will be asked to list your child's medications and their dosages (including vitamins and supplements).

Next, we will perform a comprehensive oral exam that may include age-appropriate x-rays. We will show your child any instruments and equipment used and explain their use in an age-appropriate way.

Once your child's cleaning and exam are complete, Dr. Falastin Abu-samn will talk with you about her findings. Together you can create a healthy, effective treatment plan that best meets your child's dental and personal requirements.

Finally, we want you to know we will go above and beyond to make you and your child feel relaxed and safe. Not only is their physical comfort important to us, but their emotional well-being is, too.
